چکیده

The product water of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) has to pervade the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and can lead shortages educt pathways catalyst hence significant performance losses. Here we report on efforts made enable subsecond submicron operando X-ray tomographic microscopy (XTM) over a wide range cell operating temperatures. short XTM scan times allow quantify contributions capillary-fingering phase-change-induced flow overall transport inside cathode GDL at two different temperatures 40 °C 80 during current ramp-up process. results suggest that dominates initial increase saturation levels typical automotive PEFC about °C, whereas driven development from beginning stagnating stage °C.

Water Management in A PEMFC: Water Transport Mechanism and Material Degradation in Gas Diffusion Layers

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) directly convert the chemical energy of the reactants into electrical energy and usually consist of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) sandwiched between two catalyst layers (CLs), two porous gas diffusion layers (GDLs) often coated with a microporous layer (MPL) on the CL side, and two bipolar plates with embedded gas channels. Protons and electro...

Combining operando synchrotron X-ray tomographic microscopy and scanning X-ray diffraction to study lithium ion batteries

We present an operando study of a lithium ion battery combining scanning X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) simultaneously for the first time. This combination of techniques facilitates the investigation of dynamic processes in lithium ion batteries containing amorphous and/or weakly attenuating active materials. While amorphous materials pos...

Exceptionally Preserved Cambrian Trilobite Digestive System Revealed in 3D by Synchrotron-Radiation X-Ray Tomographic Microscopy

The Cambrian 'Orsten' fauna comprises exceptionally preserved and phosphatised microscopic arthropods. The external morphology of these fossils is well known, but their internal soft-tissue anatomy has remained virtually unknown. Here, we report the first non-biomineralised tissues from a juvenile polymerid trilobite, represented by digestive structures, glands, and connective strands harboured...

Internal Soft-Tissue Anatomy of Cambrian ‘Orsten’ Arthropods as Revealed by Synchrotron X-Ray Tomographic Microscopy

The world-famous 'Orsten' Konservat-Lagerstätte has yielded detailed information about Cambrian arthropods and their morphology. Internal organs or soft tissues have, however, rarely been reported, an obvious palaeobiological drawback. In this study, we employed synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) to study microscopic 'Orsten' arthropods from the Cambrian of Sweden: Skara...

X-ray Tomographic Microscopy at TOMCAT

Synchrotron-based X-ray Tomographic Microscopy is a powerful technique for fast non-destructive, high resolution quantitative volumetric investigations on diverse samples. At the TOMCAT (TOmographic Microscopy and Coherent rAdiology experimenTs) beamline at the Swiss Light Source, synchrotron light is delivered by a 2.9 T superbend. The main optical component, a Double Crystal Multilayer Monoch...
